SPX Mixing Expertise Presented in Processing Magazine

SPX employee Joel Berg has recently published an article in Processing magazine about the vital role of mixing in the production processes of many industries and how to increase its reliability and efficiency. Joel, a senior mechanical technologist for SPX Flow Technology, has 25 years of experience in the area of mechanical design and analysis. He is based in Rochester, New York, and currently has responsibility for development, dissemination and control of global mixer mechanical design programs.

SPX’s Lightnin 700/800 mixers are often installed atop huge fermentation tanks in pharmaceutical production, chemical processing, waste treatment and other applications.

In his article, Joel offers technical advice for processors that are moving toward larger mixer installations as a way to increase their efficiency, add capacity and improve profitability. “Given this increased investment, it makes sense for companies to ensure the machinery and operations involved are best protected,” he writes.

To meet this need, Joel recommends “modal analysis,” which he defines as the study of dynamic properties of structures under vibrational excitation. “Modal analysis has been used effectively as a diagnostic tool to explain mixer failures in the field,” he writes. “The technique reveals issues with unwanted vibrations and interactions amongst a mixer, vessel and supporting structures.”
