Oils and Fats

In oil and fats industry, Seital centrifuges play an important role in the following applications:

  • De-gumming, neutralization, refining, washing of oils and fats
  • Biodiesel production
Degumming, neutralization, winterization and refining of edible oils and fats

Degumming - Water degumming

In this process the separator is used to separate hydrated phosphatides that are insoluble in oil, which can then be applied for animal feed or dried and sold in the form of lecithin.

Degumming - Simple acid degumming

This process is suitable for pretreating palm oil, palm kernel oil, coconut and olive oil, and consists in the separation of phosphatides, proteins, pigments and impurities. The first stage is the heating up of the crude oil, to which phosphoric or citric acid is mixed. After separation the resulting oil is sent to bleaching and deacidification by distillation

Neutralization - Standard neutralization

Suitable for neutralizing degummed oils or oils with low phosphatide content. The separator is used to separate sodium soap resulting from saponification of FFA with caustic soda. Due to high content of soap in neutral oil, the residual soaps are washed with hot water and separated. If very low residual soap in required, a second washing is necessary.

Neutralization - Undegummed oils

This process is used for refining soybean oil and combines degumming and neutralization.
It consists of adding phosphoric or citric acid to crude undegummed oil intensively mixed. The FFA are then neutralized with caustic soda and addition of water allows hydration of phosphatides. The separator is used to wash water and oil.

Winterization - Wet dewaxing

Applied to vegetable oils containing waxes (sunflower, corn oil) that crystallize at lower temperature causing turbidity of oil
The first step consists of the neutralization of FFA with caustic soda. After soapstock is separated, oil undergoes actual wintering process. A further stage is carried out to reduce viscosity, by cooling down the product to crystallization temperature and than carefully heated up. Finally, washing as last step further reduces soap content.

Winterization – Cold refining

This process is used for oils with low FFA content e.g. sunflower oil.
Acid is added to crude oil without prior heating and caustic is added for neutralizing FFA.
After several hours in crystallizers, oil is heated to reduce viscosity before soapstock is separated in centrifuge with waxes and a second centrifuge is then used for separation after washing.

Biodiesel production

SPX FLOW Seital series separators are used in the corn oil recovery as a Bio-product of Bioethanol production.

SPX FLOW has successful references on large installed bases in North America with capacity up to 30 T/h.
