BOOSTING EFFICIENCY WITH PRE-COOLING INNOVATION
VotatorĀ® II Scraped Surface Heat Exchanger
The Waukesha Cherry-BurrellĀ® Votator II 6x72 Scraped Surface Heat Exchanger with a medium duty configuration is used in the chemical segment, including pharmaceuticals, papermaking, and dyes, for precooling preparations prior to crystallization.
Challenge
The customer was struggling in their processing system where they implemented a traditional shell and tube type of heat exchanger for pre-cooling a flowable sodium borohydride fluid prior to entering the primary crystallizer. This shell and tube unit would become plugged with product crystals in the product stream, thus reducing the overall capacity of the system. The original process design was hindered by decreased capacity and disruptions to the entire crystallization process. The customer reached out to ITT Flow Technologies for a solution to increase capacity and stabilize daily production.

Solution
ITT Flow Technologies felt that a more dynamically assisted heat exchanger solution would consistently supply a homogenous product input to the crystallizer section without disruption. ITT Flow Technologies recommended a Votator II Scraped Surface Heat Exchanger to cool and naturally agitate the sodium borohydride solution simultaneously before successfully feeding the crystallizer unit and then proceeding to the final steps of processing. Our Application Engineering group sized and selected the Scraped Surface Heat Exchanger solution based on the product characteristics, process parameters and other unique system design considerations.
Result
Today, the ITT Flow Technologies Scraped Surface Heat Exchanger solution has stabilized and increased the system output more efficiently than ever before.
