A hygienic pump is a type of pump system used in applications where it is desirable to protect the product being produced from contamination by the exterior world. Such pumps are used in the food, beverage and pharmaceutical industries. A hygienic pump consists of three basic components – a diaphragm, an air chamber and an inner plunger. The diaphragm at the top holds in air which fills up a chamber in the middle of the vessel. When pressure is put on this chamber, via another piston on the other side of it, that pressure gets pushed into another chamber on the far side.

A hygienic pump or sanitary pump is a type of pump that regulates pressure, flow and other operational parameters. They are used in pharmaceutical synthesis, food and beverage production, vaccines, agriculture applications and the pharmaceutical industry to move some gas or liquid from one container to another.

There are three common types of hygienic pumps or also sometime referred to as sanitary pumps. The first is a centrifugal pump, which uses centrifugal force to push fluids through a pipe. A positive displacement pump moves a liquid or gas through a pipe by using a rotating mechanism that has chambers with slits; as they rotate, they squeeze the liquid out through the slits, one at a time. Rotary lobe pumps push fluids with their lobes into tubes using pistons.
