Thermal Vapor Recompression (TVR) Evaporators

The Anhydro® Tubular TVR Evaporator provides gentle, cost-effective evaporation for low-viscosity liquids in dairy, food, and industrial processing. It’s falling film design with thermal vapor recompression (TVR) and a multi-effect setup maximizes energy efficiency while protecting product quality.

The system is ideal for heat-sensitive ingredients enabling consistent concentration, reduced steam use, and precise temperature control—all in a hygienic, CIP-compatible design.

In evaporation, steam costs can be a major operating expense and maintaining product integrity adds even more complexity. The Anhydro Tubular TVR Evaporator helps solve these challenges by combining proven thermal vapor recompression technology with a flexible, multi-effect configuration.

Today’s processors face challenges such as:

  • Reducing live steam consumption to cut energy costs
  • Handling temperature-sensitive products without compromising quality
  • Meeting hygiene standards while maintaining uptime
  • Scaling or retrofitting lines without overhauling plant layouts

The Anhydro TVR Evaporator meets these needs with:

  • Multi-effect operation that recycles energy by using vapor from one effect to heat the next
  • A steam jet compressor (thermo-compressor) that recompresses vapor from one effect and reuses it in the first effect
  • Falling film design for minimal thermal exposure and short residence times
  • Integrated vapor recovery to support preheating and reduce thermal load
  • Hygienic, stainless steel construction that supports CIP and minimizes downtime
  • Modular, compact layout for seamless integration or upgrades
  • Static liquid distribution system for uniform tube wetting and optimal heat transfer
  • Advanced automation for process control, diagnostics, and compliance tracking

Why Choose Anhydro TVR Evaporators?

  • Designed for energy-efficient multi-effect evaporation
  • Ideal for applications where gentle, consistent product treatment is critical
  • Flexible configurations for new systems or retrofits
  • Backed by decades of thermal processing expertise and real-world application know-how
  • Supported by global engineering, service, and aftermarket teams
  • Pilot testing available at the SPX FLOW Innovation Center in Soeborg, Denmark

Distinctive Advantages

  • Substantially reduced live steam consumption
  • Low-temperature operation protects heat-sensitive ingredients
  • Customizable for staged concentration or multiple passes
  • Fully CIP-compatible, hygienic design
  • Advanced controls for accurate, repeatable results
  • Expert design based on specific product composition and crystallization behavior

Product Applications

  • Sweetened Condensed Milk
  • Whey Permeate and Lactose
  • Milk and Cream
  • Plant-Based Beverages
  • Juices and Concentrates
  • Nutraceuticals

Theory of Operation

The Anhydro Tubular TVR Evaporator operates as a falling film evaporator with thermal vapor recompression (TVR). In a multi-effect configuration, vapor from one effect is used to heat the next stage, with a thermo-compressor recompressing part of the vapor for reuse in the first effect. This setup minimizes live steam use and significantly improves energy efficiency.

The falling film principle ensures a thin, fast-moving liquid film inside vertical tubes, minimizing product residence time and thermal impact. A purpose-built liquid distribution system ensures full tube wetting and reliable heat transfer.

The design enables precise control of evaporation temperatures and concentration levels—ideal for sensitive dairy and food products that require gentle handling and strict quality specifications.

Frequently Asked Questions

It concentrates low-viscosity liquids by evaporating water through a falling film and multi-effect process. Thermal vapor recompression (TVR) boosts efficiency by recycling part of the vapor as a heat source, minimizing live steam demand.

A steam jet (thermo-compressor) recompresses vapor from one effect and reuses it in the first effect. Combined with multi-effect staging, this dramatically reduces live steam usage and operating costs.

It’s ideal for dairy, beverages, plant-based, nutraceutical, and industrial applications, especially where product quality, consistency, and energy efficiency are priorities.

Yes. Its compact, modular build supports integration into both new and retrofit installations with minimal layout changes.

Yes. The system provides stable, uniform cooling and evaporation, ideal for applications like lactose or whey permeate that require precise crystal formation.

It’s fully compatible with automated CIP systems and designed for sanitary, low-maintenance operation.

We provide end-to-end lifecycle support including process audits, installation, commissioning, preventive maintenance, and access to spare parts and engineering resources.
